Social inequality influences the impact of household air pollution on birth outcomes

Associate Professor Meredith Franklin published an article in Science of the Total Environment entitled “Social inequality influences the impact of household air pollution on birth outcomes”. This study examined the role of household fuel type use and socioeconomic factors influencing birth outcomes in predominantly rural regions of Bangladesh. It was found that in areas with poor access or affordability to clean fuel, cooking in an outdoor kitchen can reduce the burden on adverse birth outcomes, particularly for households having low socioeconomic status. Promoting outdoor kitchens is a possible intervention strategy to improve maternal and infant health in rural Bangladesh.
